I was sure it was a joke or hoax. I hope this kid is ok and this is a publicity stunt by his whackjob parents. 

Looks like someone snapped a pic at 11:20am local time as it was taking off.  There is no separate box, the cylindrical 'stalk' under the disc is the compartment, which was cylindrical and made of plywood.  It got crushed somewhere along the route.  It cleared 15,000 feet.  Double shit.

Aaand I'm blubbing like a six year old.

there were middle-aged ladies at my work today who didn't pick up their food for 15 minutes because they were following the story on the tv on the other side of the food court...they tried to explain what was going on, and they were just beside themselves about it, nearly in tears

turns out the kid's kooky parents have been on the bottom-of-the-barrel reality tv show 'wife swap' not once but twice...surely will be on youtube soon if not already

a local weatherman (this is all like within 30 miles of me) is currently explaining how the family's "weather balloon" is ridiculous/poorly designed/entirely inappropriate

of course the internet outrage/hilarity over the boy being home the whole time is legendary

all in all...fun stuff on a slow news day!
